1. Journalism:
Prepares students for print, electronic media — radio and television — and web journalism, pairing a theoretical grounding with reporting and writing practice.

2. Film:
Full theoretical and practical exposure to film studies. From the first year students plan and produce documentaries and short fiction films, and take part in the International Kolkata Film Festival each year.

3. Photography:
With demand for photojournalists rising, this specialisation concentrates on building technical and editorial photography skills under faculty guidance.

4. Advertising & PR:
Built around creative expression and its commercial application. Beyond the theory, students get training exposure with event management companies.

5. Animation, Design & Page Make Up:
Covers animation, design and page make up. Animation can be taken as a specialisation, while every student on the course is trained in the core design software.

Film making is a core component of the Media Science course, and a way of working through ideas about aesthetics, culture and society. From the arrival of cinema in the late nineteenth century to the digital shift of the twenty-first, moving images have carried real social and cultural weight. Film and media study connects across cinema, television and newer screen technologies.

Film and media studies build the ability to read a film, a television programme or a new media text, and to understand the forces that shape how such work gets made and consumed. The theoretical, cultural and historical grounding exists so that students can engage critically rather than only technically.

The Process of Film Making:

1. Development:
Begins with a script, book or story outline, and may involve pitching the idea to a producer.

2. Pre-production:
All the planning that happens before filming — setting the vision for the project, scouting locations and casting.

3. Production:
The shoot itself, held to budget and schedule, and dependent on constant communication between every department.

4. Post-production:
Reviewing footage and editing the film, then adding visual effects, music and sound design.

5. Distribution:
Getting the finished film to an audience, through cinemas, streaming platforms and television.

Journalism as a Career in India:
Journalism’s purpose has always been to report the truth without bias. In a democracy, that role matters — journalists are how most people learn what is happening beyond their own experience, and part of the job is holding those in office to account on the public’s behalf.

The media industry in India continues to expand, and with it the demand for news anchors, photojournalists, editors and reporters. The number of newspapers, channels and digital publications operating today leaves genuine room for new entrants who can do the work.

Key Attributes of a Successful Journalist:
Strong communication in both speech and writing; the creativity to find an angle others have missed; and the ability to argue a point and persuade an audience of it.

Career Prospects in Journalism:

1. Print Journalism:
Newspapers, journals, magazines, digests and news agencies.

2. Electronic / Broadcast Journalism:
Television, radio and internet-based broadcast platforms.

3. Web Journalism:
Online publishing across news sites, blogs and social platforms, working across text, video and images.
